caleb's crossing book cover

This week's Staff Pick of the Week is from Marilyn: Caleb's Crossing by Geraldine Brooks

Bethia Mayfield lives on colonial Martha’s Vineyard in the 1660s. At twelve, she begins a friendship with Wampanoag youth, who takes the name Caleb when he studies with her minister father. Years later, they both leave the island—Caleb to Harvard and Bethia to help at a nearby household. The choices and paths the two friends take to determine their futures, and their ultimate fates.

Why I liked it: A feisty heroine who makes her own way, a sense of time and place and rich historical detail make for a satisfying read by this Pulitzer Prize winning author.
